MASTIC LEAVES (Meneviş)

Meneviş is a small tree, common to Muğla-Denizli area. Its leaves are harvested and used to make this yogurt based dish. It is very tasty and sure to contain lots of goodness. It is a very rare meal due to limited harvest so make sure to taste whenever you come across.


Ingredients:

  • Meneviş leaves
  • Bulgur, 1 tablespoon
  • Yogurt
  • Onion
  • Paprika
  • Mint
  • Garlic

  • Preparation:

  • Wash the leaves and dice finely.
  • Add into a saucepan with plenty of water and let it simmer for 20 minutes.
  • In a pan, add diced onion, olive oil, paprika and fry 2-3 minutes.
  • Drain the leaves and add into a pan. Cook on a low heat for 10 minutes.
  • Add hot water less then enough to cover the leaves.
  • Add bulgur and salt. Cook until the water is finished.


  • In a bowl, mix yogurt, diced garlic and mint.
  • Take cooked mastic leaves onto a plate and pour garlic-yogurt on top.
  • In a pan, fry paprika with olive oil, drizzle onto the dish while hot.
